Is It Mardi Gras?

I asked John this morning.

Someone had mentioned king cake on Facebook and I thought, “Where did January go?!”

Alas. It has been a long winter in North Carolina. I know I shouldn’t complain but there’s a reason I moved away from Washington State.

The Clean Calendar

I know I only speak for myself in this family when I say I’m excited to look at a totally clean calendar.

John’s has been full for months, which is a new kind of blessing all in itself, but mine? Wonderfully empty.

Aside from the fact that we’re predicted to have twenty-degree weather tomorrow, there’s still something about the early days of January that always give me a little pep in my step. I think it is the clean calendar.

Life With Eliott and Carter, 2013

March 5
Carter: Mommy, where are we going today?
M: I don’t know, where do you want to go?
C: The gym.
M: Good. Then I’m not taking a shower.

15 minutes later….
C: Actually, I want to go to Bible study.
M: Fine, but I’m going in this (wearing gym clothes).
C: What?! Are those your clothes? It’s not pajama day for you.

I am an Obamacare Statistic

I am a 32 year old stay-at-home mom of three children under the age of seven. My husband is self-employed.

To date, my family is officially just another Obamacare statistic. My husband and I have both attempted at various hours of the twenty-four hour day, and various days of the seven day week, to submit our application. Between the two of us, the attempts total a little over ten.

Three weeks ago I spent exactly ninety-seven minutes on the phone with a very kind, very helpful, and well-spoken woman, who filled out the entire application for me as I dictated answers to her orally.

Friday Coffee Break

It is 8 o’clock in the morning on my favorite day of the week. My son is still asleep and should be for at least another hour. John took the girls to school a half an hour ago, and on Fridays, they stay until 1:30. (This is late for Carter and early for Eliott and if I could lobby for 1:30 all-school pick up every day through at least sixth grade, you better believe I would.) The heat is kicking on in the house, but the weather predicts it should be sixty degrees tomorrow.

Conversations

About two weeks ago Eliott came home talking about kids at school passing around something and “sniffing it, as hard as they could.” Mind you, the kid is only in 1st grade, so while my D.A.R.E. radar wasn’t blaring at full capacity, I did raise an eyebrow.

“What were they sniffing?”

“I don’t know, [boy in class] had some stuff in his hand and said, ‘Sniff it really hard Eliott, it makes your nose feel funny.'”

“Did you sniff it?”

“Yeah but I didn’t smell anything, and my nose didn’t feel funny.” Continue reading “Conversations”

An Open Letter To Myself In Twelve Years

Dear 45 year old Claire:

I assume you are reading this for one of the following reasons:

  • Every woman in the house has PMS right now.
  • Your daughter has a “boy issue” and has locked herself in her room after screaming how much she hates you.
  • Your son and his friends just ate the dinner you prepared early, mistaking slow cooked ribs for his after school snack.
  • One of the kids crashed the car.
  • One of the kids crashed someone else’s car.
  • The school found pot in the locker belonging to your child.
  • You just found porn in the browser history of your laptop and your email is receiving non-stop unsolicited X-rated ads every hour.
  • Nobody is listening to you.

It’s The Most Wonderful Time….Of The Year

A few nights ago, I noticed that it is finally getting dark out when the girls go to bed.

A helpful bonus in the transition from late nights and sleeping in. It seems I’m the only one left in this house still having a hard time with the before seven wake-up call.

Some Dance Camp Cuteness

I mainly do these video posts for family, so forgive my obvious/obnoxious suburban mommy-blog aren’t-my-children-the-greatest posts.

You know I don’t try to be that Mom.

As of yet, I’ve not promised that home videos and picture slide shows will “never” be playing in the background of a life celebration at some point. Now that we have Apple TV, it is all made easier.

The first two are Carter, who is in black in the back. Sorry for the bad camera placement. The second two are Eliott, who should be obvious by her attitude and sass alone. This girl might have a future as a Laker Girl. Enjoy.

Not that anyone is counting, but if you want to subscribe to my You Tube videos, apparently that’s a thing now. I can’t direct on how to do it, but by all means, feel free to post directions in the comments if you figure it out.

An Open Letter To The Church Nursery

I appreciate you.

I appreciate leaving my child in the hands of people who actually enjoy other people’s children. I appreciate the break from mommy-monotony. I appreciate your consistency, availability, and willingness to serve. I agree that you have a rare gift, and am thankful for you every day.
